At Palm Beach Sports Medicine, our surgeons are experts in the use of minimally invasive surgeries to repair damaged shoulder and knee joints.
State-of-the-art arthroscopic surgery can now be performed for many shoulder and knee injuries using only small incisions to provide portals for delicate surgical instruments, including a minute surgical camera that provides your surgeon at Palm Beach Sports Medicine with a highly detailed, enlarged view of the surgical site.
Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that allows your doctor to see the inside of a joint using a very small viewing instrument called an arthroscope. During surgery the arthroscope is inserted through a small incision on or near the joint and enables the doctor to look at the joint surfaces, the soft tissue that connects the bones (ligaments), and the tough tissue (cartilage) that covers the ends of the bones at the joint. This procedure can be used to better diagnose a joint problem, remove loose and inflamed materials or used in conjunction with other small instruments to perform reparative surgery.
Arthroscopy has many advantages over open surgery (surgery done using a larger incision) such as: cutting down on the risk of infection, less pain, quicker recovery time and can be done on an outpatient basis without requiring an overnight stay in the hospital.
While many people think of the shoulder as a single joint, it is actually made of two joints the acromioclavicular and the gleno-humeral. When injury occurs it can take place in one or both joints as well as in the soft tissues that surround, support and stabilize the bones. It is for this reason that the gentle nature of arthroscopic surgery is preferred.
Rather than use traditional or “open” surgery that involves making a large incision that cuts through muscle and other tissues, the surgeons at Palm Beach Sports Medicine are able to make small incisions or portals in the area of the affected joint and operate only on the affected area leaving working joints and tissue undisturbed.

Knee arthroscopy is one of the most common and frequently used procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of knee injuries. This is the favored technique for knee repair because it is a limited risk procedure that allows for quick recovery time and minimal pain by addressing only the problem area. As compared an “open” surgery, the minimally invasive arthroscopy procedure offered at PB Sports Medical allows our highly trained surgeons to make a small incision in the affected part of the knee and insert a very small camera equipped with the necessary instruments to correct the issue.
